FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH
Classes
We have a variety of classes available with different topics and meeting dates/times. You do not need to be a member of First Christian Church in order to fully participate in the life and activities of the church; all are welcome!
Here are our current class offerings:
Wired Word
The Wired Word is an adult Sunday School class held on Sunday morning from 10:00 – 10:30 a.m. on the 3rd floor of the Church.
A lesson on a weekly current event is e-mailed to a personal e-mail address of each participant on Thursday morning for the participant to read and study for discussion on Sunday morning.
Each lesson encourages the group members to truly think about their beliefs and its application to their own day-to-day life. Lessons have covered the baiting of Chip and Joanna Gaines on their religious beliefs to the displaced persons of Hurricane Harvey to the eclipse. No topic is off limits.
Anyone interested in joining our class is encouraged to send your e-mail address to pattyjburks@yahoo.com and be added to the list of those already receiving the Wired Word. Just watch for it in your inbox on Thursday morning and join us on Sunday morning for some stimulating conversation on how to apply biblical truths to everyday living.
Loyal Berean
The Loyal Berean Sunday School Class meets every Sunday at 10:00 am in the Fellowship Hall following group singing which begins at 9:30. (Everyone is invited for the songfest which contains favorite hymns from a variety of hymnals). Their teacher is Fleta Rose, and lessons follow the Uniform Series International Bible Lessons for Christian Teaching published by Standard Publishing. This fall’s quarterly lessons are based on God’s covenants of the Old Testament, mainly from Genesis and Exodus. The class holds a quarterly class party at The Hiway Inn on the second Monday of the month at 11:00 where devotions, reminiscences, and Bingo are played. Anyone not attending a Sunday School class is welcome to join us Sunday mornings for an uplifting time of learning and sharing.
Primary Class
Our class is called the Primary Class, but we probably need to find a new name which describes us better. We are actually a One Room Sunday School, using materials designed for ages 3-12. Our mission is to provide Christian education and fellowship during the traditional Sunday School time, 9:45 to 10:30 each week. We meet in the basement classroom to the west of the fellowship hall. We welcome all children who wish to attend. Quite often, we enjoy having visitors whose parents or grandparents are attending our adult classes.
The curriculum we use is called Deep Blue Kids: Learn and Serve. Our lessons are based on the Deep Blue Kids Bible (a children’s version of the Common English Bible). We journey through the Bible, introducing a new unit and key verse each month and studying a different story each week. Each session includes a video presentation of the day’s story, along with age-appropriate activities such as readings, games, and puzzles. We have a lot of fun with monthly trivia challenges and special songs as well. All that does not leave a lot of time for crafts, but we work those in when we can. We look forward to a new feature this year, as we will “visit” children and churches in Guatemala, Kenya, Armenia, and Alaska as we “travel” with the Deep Blue Kids.
Sermon Connection
Sermon Connection is an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the Lectionary text for the coming Sunday. Each scripture focus can be interpreted through many lens and life experiences. Come and join a time of discussion and fellowship as we discern and discover together the scriptures. Sermon Connection is held on Tuesday evenings at 5:30.
Wednesday Bible School for Children and Youth
Kindergarten through 12th grade students are invited to Wednesday evening Bible School, from 5:30-6:45 P.M., at Girard's First Christian Church. Bible School provides an opportunity to grow in faith and knowledge of God's love. After a light snack supper (served at 5:30 P.M.) students will listen to Bible stories, make arts and crafts, sing, play games, and enjoy fellowship. Please join us!
Tillery
Tillery is the afternoon group of Presbyterian/Disciples Women who meet in a home or the church at 2 p.m. the first Monday of each month (with the exception of July and August). The meetings are composed of a short business session, devotions/lessons, and refreshments. Devotion/lesson presenters obtain their materials from “Just Women” published by International Disciples Women and Disciples Women’s Ministries and other resources of their own selection. The June meeting is a “Tillery Day Out” where members visit and dine in another community. Anyone desiring to join them will be heartily welcomed.
Prayer Partners
Prayer Partners is a women group which is open to any Church lady interested in fellowship and activities. We meet the first Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. at hostess home or other locations.
This group supports all Disciples Women Mission projects by our monthly offerings. Throughout the year, we help with cookie time on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evening Youth group Wednesday night dinners.
In December this group help set up for Cookie Fair. There are others projects throughout the year we help in any way we can. Anyone interested in joining this group would be more than welcome. WE HAVE FUN.
